Google's provides a quick and easy way to see how many other Web sites exist in the search results for related keyword combinations.
Just type a partial search and Google drops in the phrases used most often and tells you how many other sites are relevant for each keyword combination.

Identify the competition for your keywords.

Value of an Email Address

I am always highlighting the value of an email address in presentations to Tourism Keys Workshops.  I really liked David Baker's thoughtful article on the subject coming up with a value of an email address in the neighbourhood of $6.40 per address.

In tourism, we need to consider the revenue of each send, the cost of each send and the number of people on our list.  In planning search engine marketing campaigns with an effective spend of $5-$15/day, I can feel really good if the campaign results in the accumulation of just three email addresses a day.  Never mind the value of the phone calls that are generated as a result of paying for clicks.

So expand your vision of success in your online marketing by always considering the value of an email address and encouraging this important action on your Web page.

What Resolution Should I Use to Upload Video to Youtube?

This week, Steve Chen, one of the founders of announced to Engadget, that over the next three months resolution at the site will be upgraded. There are a number of new video sites coming online and many of them boast significantly higher resolution than videos at Youtube - some like in HD.

The good news for video uploaders is that Google stores a copy of your video in the same resolution you upload it.

For now, when your video is uploaded to Youtube, video quality is downgraded in resolution when shown on the site ( 320 by 240 pixels), even if uploaded in HD format with video resolutions much higher!

Of course higher video resolution = higher file size = longer upload and download times . . . so there are costs to streaming higher quality for Google.

Google old maximimum file size of 100 Megabytes often forced producers to downgrade video quality to get smaller file sizes. This week, Google upped the maximum file size 10 X, setting the new maximum file size to 1 GB!

Video length is still limited to 10 minutes, so in effect, Google is encouraging uploaders to take advantage of a 10 fold increase in video quality.

Advice from this blog: Upload your Video in the highest resolution possible to . That way, whenever the site upgrades the quality of video shown, your video will be upgraded to the higher reslolution.

In a few years, the lower quality videos on the site will likely fade into obscurity, while higher res. versions will be finding their way into people's homes onto their HD televisions!

How to apply Social Media to enhance the marketing of your Tourism Business

Social media refers to the coming together of people within a community (whether that's an actual online community or simply a section on a travel or media Web site dedicated to giving consumers a voice) to actively participate in the creation of new and/or the management of existing content.
This could mean allowing users to post their own photos or videos, to rate and review trips and travel experiences (http://www.tripadvisor.com), to create tags for content, to write or respond to blogs, to change existing content (like wikis such as http://www.WetPaint.com), and more.

Social media has allowed travellers to feel empowered and in charge of their Web experiences, but it can be far more than that for marketers of tourism. When marketers harness social media elements, they can use the " wisdom of the crowds" to great advantage to increase sales and to generate goodwill among visitors.

Optimization using social media is a way to allow your visitors to influence what you show other visitors. When done correctly, it offloads the work of determining relevanc to visitors.  Other visitors essentially take care of the work for you.

There are several simple ways to allow your guests to engage in social media:

  • Reviews - In travel, customer-written reviews have been a clear value to consumers. The key with reviews is participation -- the more coverage your travel products have, the more effective the reviews will be.
  • Ratings - Ratings include stars, thumbs up and down, and a myriad of other forms. Travellers register their level of approval, and the product's rating becomes based on some form of average of responses. This type of consumer feedback is incredibly useful for optimization because it is easily rankable.
  • Digg/Reddit - Social sites provide a clearinghouse for user responses. The most well-known, Digg, allows sites to put up an icon on articles that lets the reader "Digg" the content. More "Diggs" and the article shows up higher on , a central site. Reddit is done in a similar fashion. This is cheap, but useful primarily for editorial content. It is easy to be irrelevant and undiscovered here.
  • Sharing media - images, video and more, tagged with keywords can also expand the visibility of your brand.  Encouraging visitors to give favourable reviews to this content can also boost exposure on sites like and
Optimization using social media is perfect when you have a very broad product set -- for example, a travel site that may represent literally millions of combinations of locations, properties, and services.

It would be impossible for a single travel company or tourism association to build up its own database to help customers make decisions -- in other words, to offer recommendations based on behavioral targeting -- but by allowing consumers to do the work for you, others still get the benefit of recommendations.

Social optimization only works when travellers are willing to participate. Promoting the fact that you have recommendations and ratings when nobody has actually recommended or rated anything is as compelling as entering an empty restaurant on a Saturday night. Having nothing may, in fact, be better. Even small populations of participants can be risky, as individual negative and positive reviews can skew recommendations in a sub-optimal way.

With this in mind, perhaps the best thing we can do is refer our ideal guests to the gathering places already frequented by travellers and encouraging them to make their preference for our services known there.

Lean Forward / Lean Back

The title of this post is perhaps the simplest way to explain the
essence of new media and the online engagement that is social
networking as it relates to the old entertainment / internet
experience.
The new internet is engaging and participatory. Viewers are invited
to participate in the conversation and contribute. The old internet,
much like television viewing or going to the movies was simply an
activity of consumption. Lay back and take it in. Be entertained.

The new Internet invites internet users to be active.... it's more
about surfing, than watching people surf.

How can your ideal guest engage with you using the Internet? Managing
your Feeds and making them available to people who want them is
perhaps the best way to let your visitors get to know you better . . .
on their terms.

Social Networking platforms are perhaps the easist way to invite
participation in the new Internet. We may not understand completely
why people want to know where we are and what we are doing. Indeed we
may have no interest at all in following others.... but others want
to follow us.

Keep your Web site alive and encourage those who want to enhance their
relationship with you . . . . remember, it's all about Customer
Relationship Management, and these new tools can make it easier.

How do you put that little Icon in the Browser Tab or Address Bar of Internet Explorer or Firefox?

Putting that little Icon into the address bar or tab of a browser is pretty simple (note the key next to our url in your browser) ... making a small image that captures your brand, that's another thing.   Here are the basics to creating the file and putting it where it belongs:
  • Create a small image (bmp) that is 16 pixels high and 16 pixels wide.
  • Save the file: favicon.bmp in your image editor.
  • When you are finished rename the file: favicon.ico and put it into the root folder of your Web site.
Icons that tend to look good are simple in design and use few colours.  Save it as a 16 bit image if the option presents itself.

The search engine automatically looks for this icon whenever a page on your site is loaded.  That's all there is to making your icon show up in the address bar or tab of a browser like firefox or internet explorer.

Are you meeting your International Traveller Needs?

Being found by search engines in your own backyard is difficult enough.... how about reaching travellers in other countries with the words they use at home to find travel?

Consider the word "accommodation". Commonly misspelled, it is used most often in the UK, Australia and New Zealand to describe places to stay whi
le travelling. The word "travelling" itself but with two l's spelled "travelling" in Canada and in British English but with only one l - traveling in the U.S.  The words "accommodations" (note the s) and "lodging" are more commonly used by Americans. A similar distinction can be made for the words "holiday" and "vacation", with the latter being more common in the U.S.  In Ontario, many travellers often use the word 'getaway' for short in-province travel experiences commonly enjoyed around weekends.

Many in tourism offer toll free calling.  However, overseas guests cannot make use of this service.  If you have a toll free number, be sure to provide a phone number that overseas visitors can call as well.  Can you provide services or Voice/Video Chat on your site to provide a similar level of service to international guests?

Can Journalists find story ideas featuring your tourism business on the Web?

According to the Arketi Group 2007 Web Watch Survey, 84 percent of journalists say they would or already have used blogs as a primary or secondary source for articles. 100% of those (journalists) surveyed say they rely on the Internet to help get their job done. One-quarter of journalists say blogs make their job easier.

Sixty percent of journalists say they spend more than 20 hours a week on the Internet. When asked how journalists use the Internet:

  • 98% say reading news
  • 97% say emailing
  • 93% say finding news sources
  • 89% say finding story ideas
  • 72% say reading blogs
  • 67% say watching webinars or webcasts
Where story ideas lurk:
  • 79% of journalists report finding story ideas on newswires
  • 74% say from Web sites
  • 72% say from other media outlets
  • 54% report blogs spark story ideas
The message is clear.... create content online that appeals to journalists to develop earned media leads.  Story rich themes in blogs, video and online press releases can generate significant earned media exposure.  Also blog with recent headlines in mind.

Earlier this summer, Northern Edge Algonquin jumped to the Web to tell journalists about "The Seven Wonders of Algonquin Park by canoe" when the canoe was named one of Canada's Seven Wonders and Algonquin Park was named Canada's second most priceless national park in two separate contests.  Print and TV media beat a path to the door.

What stories are making headlines today that connect to your tourism business?  Be sure to sign up for the press release newswire at PRWeb.com for free press releases.
