Newsletter Content - What do customers Want?

What do you offer in your Newsletter?
Typically, your customers want four things:
  • education,
  • information,
  • entertainment,
  • and a good deal.
Think about the content you can easily deliver on a regular basis.  In the tourism industry, you may find that you deliver more newsletters during booking season.  At the Edge, we've found that in the summer, a weekly or bi-weekly update produces a high number of followup clicks and phone calls.    In the other seasons, e-newsletters might be produced only every 4-6 weeks.  It all depends if we are able to deliver value that touches at least three of the four needs identified above.

Keep an ear to the needs of your subscribers.  If they think you are emailing too frequently, you'll end up being labelled as spam and disappear from their inbox, or worse, risk your good relationship with your email service provider.

cheers,
t.

Sometimes when websites are redesigned, pages become renamed and any existing links to your Website become invalid. Likewise any rankings by Google or other search engines are tossed out the window.

There is a solution. Tell the Internet where you moved to . . . even if you established a new domain name, you can Redirect your existing links to the new pages.

Here is how. You or your Web architect (preferred term over Webmaster!) need to create or add to a special file on your Web server. The file is called .htaccess
This file has no name in front of the "."

Open or create this file as an ascii text file using a text editor. Then upload the file to your Web server. NOTE: When creating this file, you will need to give it a name like 1.htaccess , then when you upload it to the same location as your /index.html file, rename the file to remove the 1 and name it .access

What's in the file?

If you want to move all your files to a new directory or Web domain, just enter this one line.

RedirectMatch 301 (.*) http://www.new_website_name.com/

We recently did this for a Website called, http://www.outdooryogatrips.com , we redirected all links to this site to a new page at http://www.northernedgealgonquin.com/yoga.html

Click the link above and see what happens as you are automatically redirected.

For individual files that have been renamed, consider entering one line entries like the following for each file that is renamed.

Redirect 301 /old-file-name.htm http://www.new_website_name.com/new-file-name.htm

For each file you rename, create a new line and make a new entry.
A few things to note:
  • Redirect - use a capital R
  • 301 tells the internet that this is a permanent change.
  • if the file is in a directory on your domain, file name would be /directory/old-filename.htm
  • there is a space before the new location.
  • if the new file name is on the same website, there is no need to list the domain name, just enter /new-file-name.htm
  • each entry gets its own line.
There are many benefits to ensuring the search engines and existing links stay linked, most importantly, you will continue to benefit from your existing Web traffic.

Inspiring Trendsetters: Naturally Superior

I was inspired to bring to light some cool ways Dave Wells at Naturally Superior Adventures is using Community Tools to enhance their Web presence.
  • First they successfully sold an adventure trip on EBay. The auction site allows owners of travel experiences to list them for auction with a reserve price so that there is a minimum set. The cost of listing is minimal - with decent exposure a cost of $5 seems little to pay to try out this technique.
  • Second, I love how Dave has added a tag line to his email that includes links to their YouTube Channel. Although we've set up a channel for Northern Edge Algonquin YouTube Videos,
  • it gave me the idea to ensure that our videos get favourable reviews on Youtube. By promoting the links to the YouTube site with our email list via our newsletter perhaps we can encourage positive reviews of our videos, increasing their visibility and number of views, enticing folks about our offerings.....
Just think about it, do you have an hour to invest in learning how Ebay works? Do you have unused capacity that you would like to sell? What about video? Do you have a channel on YouTube? It's pretty simple to set up, just start an account and start uploading your videos.

Thanks for Sharing Dave, we're all in this together.

Get Exposure in Multiple Locations with User Generated Travel Resources

BootsnAll.com is a popular travel site featuring links to blogs and community advice on where to go and what to do on your journey. With an invitation for users to provide region specific information, this is an opportunity for communities, clusters, and regions to provide information for travelers as a regional expert. The information provided on the site is aggregated with photos from photo sharing site: at www.travelicio.us.

Be sure when uploading photos to flickr to tag them with regional keywords as advised in earlier posts so that your images show up in other rss feed aggregators like these.

What is your community doing to take advantage of opportunities like these? What steps do you need to take to start spreading more cookie crumbs about your community online?

Google has announced a new Custom Search - Business Edition.
a Software as a Service (SaaS) that aims to make it "simple and inexpensive" for small businesses to add site search with Google functionality to their Web sites. The service comes with a $100 U.S. annual price tag and removes outside advertising that is a part of the free service already available which could redirect your Web visitor to a competing site.

Nothing tops a well designed site with an easy to navigate interface, but making your site searchable may make it even easier to appeal to the search whims of your ideal guest.

Interesting indeed that Milcroft Inn can be located in so many different locations.
Each business can correct their own listing on Google Maps.
Google describes how errors can be corrected at:

I noticed that the incorrect information is a result of other Websites, possibly some that Millcroft is paying to be a member of, and others that publish information for free.

ie:
www.charmingcountryinns.com/./millcroftinnandspa.php3
www.selectontarioinns.com/inns/509/extra.php

Click through on each listing. There is a space on each listing to correct errors for third party Websites.

This type of incorrect location information likely needs to be corrected by the Webmaster on the cluster Website as well. Make sure they have your correct location, website, and contact information!

I recommend the Millcroft Inn review the listings and contact the owners of each domain to ensure their individual listings are correct.

I trust this information will be helpful.
