How do you put that little Icon in the Browser Tab or Address Bar of Internet Explorer or Firefox?

Putting that little Icon into the address bar or tab of a browser is pretty simple (note the key next to our url in your browser) ... making a small image that captures your brand, that's another thing.   Here are the basics to creating the file and putting it where it belongs:
  • Create a small image (bmp) that is 16 pixels high and 16 pixels wide.
  • Save the file: favicon.bmp in your image editor.
  • When you are finished rename the file: favicon.ico and put it into the root folder of your Web site.
Icons that tend to look good are simple in design and use few colours.  Save it as a 16 bit image if the option presents itself.

The search engine automatically looks for this icon whenever a page on your site is loaded.  That's all there is to making your icon show up in the address bar or tab of a browser like firefox or internet explorer.
