Web Page Design 101

With Keywords in Hand, it's time to start working on the on-page content. Choose to design some pages for your site directly around the keywords you have identified.  Then work in keywords to the page naturally. This will take a number of reviews to ensure all potential keyword leaks are plugged, but be sure usability is top of mind as well:
  • Keyword usage: Let copy flow while maintaining
    keyword balance
  • Headings: compelling and informative and keywords near front. (H1 tag most important)
  • Title tag: This is the most important header tag.  Create a compelling, keyword rich title for the page - this appears on many search engines as the bold title of your page, so get it right.
  • Description tag: Each page gets its own description.  Take time to write it well.  It also often appears in Search Results.  It must inspire a click and be a description that is both compelling and reinforces the keyword relevance of the page
  • Voice: The site should use a consistent voice from page to page
  • Calls to Action: Use words that do more than inform but compel action.  What do you want your page visitor to do next?  Tell them to do it!  Make sure they stand out and don't let your Web page content get in the way of helping your Ideal Guest take your Ideal next step.
  • Benefits: Focus on benefits over features.... why does this guest want to choose you as their service provider.
  • Skimming & Scanning: White space rules.  Make the document easy to skim and scan while giving the reader the important information as they do so.
  • Great Images: Think about your ideal image: model (age, sex, groups), location (great location), activity (or cues of activity - ie. skis over shoulder), emotion (focus on the face).  Tag them and post them to and picasa, etc.
  • Media links and Credibility: Let your ideal guest tell why they chose you and why they are happy they came.  Video reviews are awesome, posted reviews on third party sites like TripAdvisor.com have reportedly boosted revenue by 20%.  Put keyword tags whereever possible.

Test your content with people you trust that are outside your business.  Be prepared to make changes.
